Caroline had a busy day today, but we got good news! The ophthalmologist checked her eyes this afternoon and said that they looked perfect; they will check them again in 2-3 months to make sure things are growing as they should be. Her MRI was rescheduled for tomorrow because her afternoon was booked. This morning the surgeon came back to re-do her central line (the IV that was supposed to be "permanent") because it stopped working last night - basically the nurses could get meds and fluid into her body through the line, but they couldn't get blood out of it. Because she was having blood tests every 3 hours last night that meant they had to stick her heel over and over again. She also had a blood transfusion today to replace some of the blood they've been taking. She was wide awake this morning and looking all around, but after having morphine for her surgery and having her eyes dilated she was pretty beat the rest of the day.
Caroline started getting some better nutrition tonight (the $1,000/day infant Gatorade) since they have a handle on her system now. She will start taking the meds to help with her DI soon, but the endocrinologist wants her to take the kind that is made to be taken orally and obviously she can't do that yet. The neonatologist was working with him to figure out how to administer the drug through the IV. Tomorrow she should also start getting some breast milk in tiny amounts to supplement her IV fluids. Eventually the IV fluids will not be needed and she will eat only the milk.
Last night our nurse Renee took some really cute pics of Caroline while she was having some awake time. Renee hung up the best photos and tidied up her "room" and bulletin board. It was nice to walk in this morning and see her room all decorated. We also took some pics today when she was awake:
